The cabin at a glance
Leonora by the Sea is an entire 1940s beach cottage on the north shore of the Hood Canal in Tahuya, Washington — the quiet side of Puget Sound. It has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and 4 beds, and sleeps up to 5 guests. You'll have the whole cabin to yourselves; there's no shared space with a host or other guests.
The cabin is family-owned, and we've been hosting here for a few years now. The main living space has a bay window, looking out toward the canal and the Olympic Mountains beyond it.
Two bedrooms and four beds work for two couples, a small family, or a group of friends sharing a weekend on the canal.
Kitchen and dining
The kitchen is a full kitchen, built around a vintage range. It's equipped for guests who'd rather cook a real meal than eat out every night, whether that's a quick breakfast before a walk on the beach or a full dinner after a day on the water.

Bedrooms and bathroom
The cottage has two bedrooms, four beds and one bathroom — the original soft-pink bathroom, kept as it was rather than remodeled into something more generic. Every bed is made up with natural-fiber bedding.
Where everyone sleeps: a queen bed in the main bedroom, which looks out to the water; a double bed and a single bed in the second bedroom; and a queen-size sofa bed in the living room for the fifth guest.
Heat, WiFi and working remotely
The cabin is heated with a wood-burning stove, and firewood is stocked inside so guests don't need to bring or buy any. It's ready to use as soon as you arrive.
Starlink high-speed WiFi is available if you need to work remotely. Between the stove and the WiFi, you can be as connected or as unplugged as you want during your time here.
The cabin has regular heating as well, so the stove is for the evenings you want a fire, not something you have to keep going. The stove matters most in the colder months — winter stays here mean woodstove evenings, whether or not you're getting any work done during the day.
The beach, kayaks and paddle boards
The beach is private, shared only with neighbors along this stretch of shoreline, with no public access — and it's close, about fifty steps from the cabin door to the beach. It is a gravel-and-shell beach rather than sand, so bring shoes you do not mind getting wet. Twice a day the tide goes out and reveals a working oyster bed; read more about it on the oysters and clams page.
Kayaks and paddle boards are kept at the property, so there's no need to bring your own or rent them elsewhere — just carry them down and put in from the beach. It's also a good spot for wildlife: guests see seals, bald eagles, and herons.
Summer brings the warmest afternoons and the most swimmable shallows, which makes it the easiest time of year to use the beach and the kayaks together. The other seasons have their own character — fall for clear skies and returning salmon, winter for storm-watching and the firmest, sweetest oysters, spring for wildflowers and the longest kayaking days.

Outside, the cabin has a deck — a good spot for morning coffee or an evening after the beach — plus a BBQ grill for cooking outside, and free off-street parking right at the cabin.
